The Hawthorne Roots are a 4-time award winning, sister led rock band from Bozeman, Montana. They are on tour promoting their EP, “On Second Thought.” The group consistently brings a soulful and energetic performance to the stage, every lyric sung with passion and authenticity. Their original material continues to gain momentum and admiration within the northwest community and beyond. Their music draws inspiration from Fleetwood Mac, Heart, and Sheryl Crow. Defined by their tightly woven harmonies and relentlessly catchy melodies, The Hawthorne Roots bring a distinctly unique and exciting sound to the Montana music scene and have received multiple “Bozeman’s Best Of” music awards in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
The Hawthorne Roots’ story begins with Emma, born in 1986, and Madeline born in 1989. The sisters grew up on the east coast spending their early years outside of Boston and later moving north to New Hampshire. Their musical lives began at birth with both mother and father heavily involved in the classical music community in Boston. Madeline began writing songs at the age of 16 leaning on inspiration from folk artists like Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, and Neil Young. Madeline moved to Bozeman, Montana in 2008 to go to college at Montana State University. Emma made her way west in 2013. It was not until 2014 they decided to team up for Madeline’s first recording session with Preston White of Boxwood Studios.
In 2014, Madeline and Emma paired up with bassist Casey George and drummer Michael DeJaynes to form The Hawthorne Roots. The band performed Madeline’s original songs for the first year. They recorded a 3 song EP in 2015 at The Low Country Studios which is available on soundcloud under “The Low Country Sessions.” The band experienced multiple iterations as they continued to grow and travel outside of Montana. The current lineup consists of bassist Andrew Olivo, guitarist/vocalist Lucas Mace, and drummer/vocalist Jerrad Highman. Their live performances channel positive energy that connects with the audience and makes for an unforgettable show.
The Hawthorne Roots are independently managed by group founder Madeline Kelly and marketed by the sister duo. Every member of the band is committed to taking this project as far as it will go. The group tours heavily in the western region, working tirelessly to build their brand and expand their audience. The band plans to release more music within the year. Their music comes straight from the heart.
